Trumpeters were the stars of the baroque instrumental world, their instrument invoking pageantry, celebration, military conquest and regal grandeur – the instrument of kings and queens. Alison Balsom, who has just become the first British woman to win Gramophone Artist of the Year, is twenty-first century trumpet royalty with a sound both noble and nimble, an instrumental Olympian combining sheer musical athleticism with a polished subtlety of a poet. Joined by baroque experts The English Concert she celebrates ‘royal’ music by Handel and Purcell – works for state occasions, incidental pieces for the theatre and the concert hall, music of effervescent virtuosity and lyrical warmth.
Balsom is…superb… combining technical brilliance with penetrating musicianship – a true poet of the trumpet.
