Jazz @ Turner Sims

Autumn 2013

The language of jazz this Autumn has an international dimension with contributions from leading exponents from Europe, America and the UK.

European perspectives come from Italian duo Kekko Fornarelli and Roberto Cherillo, UK collective Slowly Rolling Camera – both showcasing new projects – and Finland’s Alexi Tuomarila Trio. American saxophonist David Murray makes a long overdue return to Turner Sims with his new quartet, whilst another foursome – Anglo-American group The Impossible Gentlemen – visit fresh from success at the 2013 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. There are two diverse takes on words and music: Denys Baptiste’s powerful and joyous Let Freedom Ring!, inspired by Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech, is revisited and expanded 10 years after its acclaimed premiere, whilst pianist Stan Tracey’s festive concert features his recent take on Dylan Thomas’ classic A Child’s Christmas in Wales. And finally there is a meeting of friends and minds as pianist Larry Willis partners legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela for what promises to be a magically intimate evening.
