Free Lunchtime Concert: John Ireland Prize Concert

Presented by the University of Southampton Music Department

The third annual John Ireland Prize, run by the University of Southampton Music Department, welcomes special guests Professor Vince Emery, the generous donor of the prize, and David Wordsworth, the director of the John Ireland Trust.

Our guests, alongside Turner Sims Concert Hall Manager Kevin Appleby, will judge the competition, which features student performances of the celebrated twentieth-century English composer’s piano pieces and songs. The competition has attracted a record number of entries this year, as the taste for Ireland’s music establishes itself – the aim of the Prize, of course. Expect violin music, piano solo, and some unfamiliar songs as well as such favourites as Sea Fever and If there were dreams to sell.
