Distinguished British pianist Imogen Cooper returns for the second of her three recitals in 2017/18 focusing on the music of Haydn and Beethoven. This evening’s programme concludes with the set of variations which takes its name from the sixteen-bar theme also used in the composer’s Eroica Symphony. The programme includes both Beethoven’s and Haydn’s final works. Beethoven described his last work for piano as ‘6 Bagatelles or Trifles for solo piano, some of which are rather more developed and probably the best pieces of this kind I have written.’ Haydn’s final work is arguably his most popular single-movement work for the instrument.
