A millennial meeting of Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush, heartbreak, longing, and a taste for irony remain constant touchstones, Maz O’Connor’s songs are short stories, combining acoustic instruments, folk imagery, and electronic soundscapes.
Beginning with a tape recorder and an imaginary audience at age four, Maz has since released 2 albums and an EP and received play across BBC radio, from Radio 4 to 6music, with live sessions on Radio 2 and 3 along the way. Tonight she brings her ethereal vocals and unique repertoire to a live audience at Turner Sims. Joined by collaborators Will Gardner on piano and John Parker on double bass, she will perform songs from her upcoming album and previous releases, with a song-cycle exploring themes of anxiety, isolation, and self-reflection just to name a few.
BBC Performing Arts Fellowship graduate Maz O’Connor is a real find, fusing influences from the past (Joni Mitchell) with those of the present (Bon Iver) to concoct a dazzling array of part electric, part acoustically crafted folk that occasionally borders on the experimental. Drowned in Sound
O’Connor’s ace, apart from her remarkable song writing talent, is her captivating voice. Q Magazine

Supporting Maz’s set is the acapella trio Polly Gone Wrong. With the odd bit of added clog, two Kates and a Polly will fill your ears with an eclectic musical menagerie – intricate vocal harmonies, textured layers, and improvisation.
Residing in traditional gypsy waggons on a semi-ancient woodland project in deepest Hampshire, Polly Gone Wrong revel in unusual spaces and interesting venues, popping up in secret locations at Wilderness and Shambala festivals, and now the not-so-secret Turner Sims.
Truly superb! So joyful, musical, fun, highly entertaining and delightfully talented…. A trio of voices blended together beautifully in a unique and playful style…..There’s nothing ‘Wrong’ about this lot. Absolutely brilliant. Audience Member
