Turner Sims Intern Emma Atkins gives us her take on Keyon Harrold’s upcoming concert on 13th April…
Grammy Award – winning Keyon Harrold, hailed as one of the “leading jazz trumpet players of a new generation” (All Music) will be performing at Turner Sims on Friday 13th April. I am really excited about this concert, Keyon has worked with a huge range of highly acclaimed artists for example Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Common and Lauryn Hill, and so this will be an amazing opportunity to see him perform.
Within this concert, Keyon will be playing music from his highly appraised 2017 album, The Mugician. This album includes influences from jazz, hip-hop, blues, rock, reggae, and rap. I am keen to see how he orchestrates this variety of genres and stimuluses. Each track on The Mugician emphasises an inspirational message. My favourite two tracks on the album are The Mugician and Wayfaring Traveler due to the upbeat, feel-good atmosphere that they demonstrate. Influences from reggae music are specifically present in the track The Mugician, this creates room for lots of interesting rhythms and quick thick bass sounds.
As a music student, I thrive on watching live performances, particularly those of artists who I have not seen before. Having watched clips of Keyon on stage live, I am anticipating a truly unique performance with lots of different elements. Not only is he a master in pushing the traditional boundaries of the trumpet, he adds his own creative perspective on composition and performance. It is clear that Keyon enjoys collaborating with different artists and exploring the depths of music, I am hugely excited to see this shine through in his forthcoming performance.
