Drummer, percussionist, and composer, Sarathy Korwar makes his Turner Sims debut with music from his new album. ‘There is Beauty, There Already’ blends Indian folk, jazz, and minimalism into a mesmerising soundscape.
The music flows in circular patterns, creating a trance-like rhythm. It draws inspiration from Indian traditions, jazz legends like Max Roach, and minimalist composers such as Terry Riley and Steve Reich.
Korwar’s ensemble features a rich mix of instruments. You’ll hear deep bass from the tabla, bright tones from the South Indian ghatam, sharp snaps from the drum kit, and electronic textures from the Buchla synthesiser. Together, they create a sound that bubbles and flows through a stream of steady rhythm, forever in motion like the ceaseless energy of a river.
Born in the US, grown in India and matured in London, Sarathy Korwar brings together the Indian classical tradition with a love of jazz. Studying classical percussion with Rajeev Devasthal and Sanju Sahai, Sarathy transferred the learning to the Western drum kit, and his unique sound and style was born
Korwar has established himself as one of the most original and compelling voices in the UK jazz scene, his collaborations revealing his ongoing explorations of the vibrant intersection where East and West meet. He leads the UPAJ Collective – a loose band of South Asian jazz and Indian classical musicians brought together through a love of collaboration and improvisation in residency at the Jazz Café in London. Korwar has collaborated with the likes of Shabaka Hutchings (The Comet Is Coming), clarinettist Arun Ghosh and producer Hieroglyphic Being, as well as groups Penya and Ill Considered. He has toured with Kamasi Washington, Anoushka Shankar, Yussef Kamaal and Moses Boyd.
