This One’s Just a Warning – A Formal Horse
The opening track of A Formal Horse’s new EP Meat Mallet opens with the band’s harmonic vocals chanting the phrase ‘This One’s Just a Warning’, before introducing scattered rock elements coming to a head for the remainder of the track. The progressive layering of sounds throughout this song eases the listener in to their hard rock meets nerdy prog style, and after the first listen you’ll not want to put the record down. We can’t wait to hear how their music transforms in an acoustic setting like Turner Sims!
A Little Love – Jack Francis
Having just released his self-titled debut album, the song A Little Love beautifully introduces Francis’ stylistic blend of folk and country to his audience. The soft acoustic guitar elements complemented by his versatile voice creates a relaxing opening, with the song ascending into a bright melody with the help of the metallic trumpet. Featuring the lyric ‘my Sunday dream’, Francis’ performance at Turner Sims will be sure to transform the Summer Night into a Sunday dream.
Easy Now – The Chateau Bateau Band (Joan Shelly cover)
Performing the lesser-known song Easy Now by Joan Shelley, The Chateau Bateau Band use their intricate harmonies to put their own spin on a track that discusses the prominence of friendship and change in a time of lockdowns. Weaving together tunes from American country to Appalachian ditties, you can download their Live from Lower Hewood Farm project for free on BandCamp.
I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor – Baby Charles
Featured in Soul 45’s Volume 1 Mix, Baby Charles’ interpretation of The Arctic Monkey’s I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor is an unlikely find. The alternative/indie turned R&B/soul sound adds a completely different dimension to the track, and we look forward to hearing what other forgotten, rediscovered and reinterpreted classics Mark James features within his set.
Schubert Piano Sonata No 20 in A, D959 – Eric Lu
Initially considered a neglected piece of work due to its supposed inferiority to Beethoven, Schubert’s penultimate Sonata is revitalised by the pianissimo flair of Eric Lu. The tranquil nature of his playing, entwined with the emphatic notes throughout the middle section of the Andantino second movement, certifies Lu’s position as a world class pianist. Despite the piece being completed just a few months before Schubert’s death, Lu successfully brings about a new lease of life to his works.
Raag Hameer: Alap – Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan
Hameer is a nocturnal Hindustani classical raag, created to invoke feelings of courage and bravery, with alap being an improvised melodic structure used to introduce the next raag. This dynamic piece begins with the gentle playing of the sitar, building with its rich electricity as the song progresses. Regarded as one of the finest Indian classical musicians in the world, we look forward to hearing a variety of raags on Saturday 9 July.
