Engagement and Participation

Turner Sims is more than a venue. Our vibrant new engagement programme is extending music beyond our hall. We’re enabling communities to connect, dream, and work with us to spread the joy of live music.

Curiosity and collaboration sit at the heart of our engagement work. We’re learning about the music our communities enjoy and how they want to experience it. Our goal is for people of all ages and backgrounds to feel empowered to make their bold ideas happen.

Together, we’re creating moving experiences that we hope will inspire you to join in.

Family Days

We’re opening our doors and getting to know our neighbours with free and low-cost Family Days. Music, dance and crafts spill out of the hall, into the foyer and onto the lawn. These events are a chance for families to explore our venue and make memories together.

Family Days are the start of a new strand of events for children, young people and families.

Schools Concerts

All children and young people should have access to the joy of live music. We’re working with Southampton Music Hub and Hampshire Music Service to help make that happen.

In 2023-24 we’re presenting five school concerts together. Free to attend, the concerts give children a first-class experience of live music without parents or schools having to worry about the cost.

Other collaborations this year will see Southampton schools Imagine a Story and soundtrack. Stanmore Primary School will help us create a Listening Guide for anyone new to attending concerts. And Summer Family Day 2024 will be extra special, thanks to a group of talented young helpers from Bassett Green Primary School!

The Vibe

A team of 18-25-year-olds are creating a new strand of music events at Turner Sims as part of The Vibe. We’ve invited them to bring the foyer to life and make it a more inviting space for young people.

This year 14 young people from across Southampton make up The Vibe Collective. 50% are students at the University of Southampton and 50% live and work in the city. With passions ranging from classical to rap, they’re united in their love of live music.

Keep a lookout for Vibe events across the spring and summer, in our foyer and beyond!

Future Producers

Professional experience can help students stand out to potential employers once they graduate. With the University’s Department of Music, we’re enabling students to gain that experience.

The Future Producers will work with us to plan, programme, market and administer a concert at Turner Sims. They’ll be making their mark on the programme and learning valuable skills along the way.

This year Future Producers F.R.A.Z. have big plans for an event at Turner Sims and out in the community.

Turn It Up

Local artists play a vital role in spreading the joy of live music. This year, with the help of SoCo Music Project, we’ve launched Turn It Up to support local musicians. Artists, 5-10 years into their career, will gain professional support and a platform to turn up the volume on their music projects.

This year’s Turn It Up artists, Pegasuses, will be performing as part of the Summer Festival.

Arts Award and Artsmark

We are proud to be an Arts Award Centre and Artsmark Partner, providing high quality music education within formal or informal learning.
