A Turner Sims Summer Family Day 2024

In the green gardens of Highfield campus, there is a unique building made specially for making and enjoying beautiful music. Join us at Turner Sims Southampton on Sunday 30 June for a day of magical musical activities and events for children and grown-ups of all ages.

Get the whole family involved with workshops, music, dance, craft – and of course the chance to make LOTS of noise. Bring your picnic lunch to enjoy in the gardens, get your face painted – a perfect day out!

David Gibb Big Band / 11am

Join David Gibb and his amazing band as they take you on a musical journey. Travel through David’s hilarious and often surreal imagination, where wolves roam the school corridors, sunflowers grow right up to the stars, and bears dance the night away at the disco. With lots of audience interaction and chances to join in, David’s songwriting draws from a wide range of musical influences and genres including jazz, folk, reggae, and rock ‘n’ roll. This is music that the whole family can enjoy together!

Big Bug Hunt / 12pm

Join us for a bug hunt around the gardens of Highfield Campus. Learn fun facts about the amazing insects crawling around amongst us and see how many you can tick off the list!

Community Stage / 1.30pm / 3.30pm

Join us to celebrate local talented young people from our city as they take to the stage with an exciting line up of music and dance performances. FolkActive Youth Ensemble will bring lots of energy with their folk tunes and Hampshire Stepping. Local male youth dance company, FuzzyLogic, will perform Attention and FuzzyClear, a company of young male dancers with autism, will perform Who Am I? exploring identity and acceptance.

Jham! / 12pm / 2.15pm
Jham! is an upbeat, playful and energetic collaboration between dancers and musicians that highlights the rhythmic play between the ancient and the modern. Jham! features prominent musicians including a beatboxer, a classical Indian percussionist and a Karnatik vocalist alongside classical Indian dancers.

JUMP – Voices from the Insect World / 1pm

Let’s move into a world in which we all leap, bound, hop, bounce, skip, bob, caper, trill, whirr, croak, buzz, chirp, squeak, chirrup and jump for joy with the best of them. Written and performed by composer Karen Wimhurst, field recordings of insects and amphibians become part of an exciting musical score. They take you on an enchanting musical journey. Karen introduces you to 9 creatures including crickets, grasshoppers and toads. Joined by Karen on live multi-tracked clarinet, the work draws on classical and jazz in an engaging duet.

Puppetry and Conducting Workshop / 2.15pm

Ever wondered what a conductor does in front of an orchestra? How do their body movements relate to the sound the musicians are making? What aspects of the music are they trying to communicate? Join musicians from the University of Southampton, puppeteers from Dotted Line Theatre and puppet Pythagoras to explore music conducting.

Creative Beats Workshop / 3.15pm

YES! Creative Beats, from the Isle of Wight, specialise in interactive samba drumming and percussion workshops with an emphasis on fun and friendship! Come and join Yetta and Emma for a fully inclusive, participatory rhythm workshop. It’s suitable for all ages and abilities – the more the merrier! You’ll be playing some rhythm games and learning some fun grooves playing boomwhackers and sound shapes.

Invent an Insect! Craft Workshop

Join paper artist Nathan Ward in the foyer for this drop-in workshop to create your very own imaginary insect! Free to join and all the craft materials will be provided.
