Turner Sims Team top picks for Autumn 2023

With so much incredible live music in store for the months ahead, what will you choose? Take a listen to our Autumn 2023 playlist, curated by Concert Hall Manager, Kevin Appleby. Read on to find out what dates our team are putting in their diaries!

Val Drayton – Head of Operations

I’m looking forward to trying something new this autumn and the Turner Sims programme always includes wonderful surprises and hidden gems from artists I’ve never heard of before. This season my pick is Fitkinwall. Described by the Guardian as ‘a duet that pits scratchy laptop noises against the brilliant consonance of the harp’, they make beautiful, edgy, immersive soundscapes to get lost in.

Jessica Santer – Head of Engagement and Participation

I can’t wait to bring my children to see YolanDa’s Band Jam in October. We saw YolanDa and her band perform in London earlier this year and all the children in the audience were out of their seats dancing all the way through the concert. It was such an exciting and vibrant atmosphere, a brilliant way to introduce children to live music. I’m really excited for families of Southampton to have the same experience.

Louise Coysh – Director, Turner Sims Transition, Associate Director (Arts & Culture), University of Southampton

I can’t wait to see Hannah Peel at Turner Sims this September. I first came across Hannah through her collaboration with Bristol-based Paraorchestra, The Unfolding in 2022, which I saw live at The Barbican, London. The music was energetic, spellbinding and deeply atmospheric . From there, I’ve gone on to explore and enjoy Hannah’s genre-defying mix of music.

David Hurlock – Box Office Assistant

I am really looking forward to seeing The Bad Plus with their new line up and emphasis on new material. Definitely one of my standout artists in the season. I have liked them since I started working at the hall and the first album I listened to was These are the Vistas. I like the way they take songs you would not necessarily expect and cover them in their own style. I particularly enjoy their cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana, as this is one of the bands that was heavily on rotation when I was first getting into alternative music.

Sara Lock – Head of Arts Communication, University of Southampton

My pick is Bill Laurance and Michael League. I dipped into their album Where You Wish You Were to see what it was like. Before I knew it, I’d downloaded and listened to the full album 3 times! I’m a daydreamer and lapsed pianist who loves to travel. The piano melodies and global strings hooked me in. The chilled and cheeky place they’ve imagined is somewhere I definitely wish to explore.

Daniel Cox – Front of House Manager

Leon McCarron is my season pick. The area around the River Tigris has such a stunning yet wild landscape. Due to current issues we rarely get to see it. Living in Southampton, our rivers and the sea have such a vast impact on the city and the people living here. I’d like to the similarities and differences the River Tigris has on the local environment and people, compared with Southampton.

Elizabeth Howard – Arts Administrator

I’m a big fan of Hip Hop music, so I’m drawn to Romarna Campbell’s music.  Her track Inherently Political is my favourite – just watching her tell the story on drums and the drums taking centre stage is inspiring.

Jilly Evans – Box Office Manager

I’m looking forward to coming to Matthew Halsall on Thursday 12th October. I hadn’t heard of him before I uploaded the new season onto our box office system but thought my stepson might enjoy the concert as he used to play the trumpet. When I listened to the YouTube clips on our website I loved it, so now my husband my stepson and I are all coming along!

Vic Fabian – Box Office Assistant

Looking forward to the Vida Guitar Quartet simply because I have never encountered a guitar quartet before and am always eager to try something different – particularly keen to hear their handling of Vivaldi and Bernstein – how varied can you get?!?!

Joanna Roberts – Marketing Officer

I am most looking forward to another visit from Cara Dillon and her brilliant band. Such an incredible voice – and her first new material in a while. My Dad is a big fan, so I’ve booked him in too!

Autumn 2023 at Turner Sims opens with the Piatti Quartet on Tuesday 19 September. Head to What’s On to see what’s happening, or check out our digital brochure
