Quick Questions – Mica Millar

We look forward to welcoming the brilliant Mica Millar to Turner Sims next month! We catch up with the new star ahead of her performance on Saturday 8 July

LJ: It’s been one year since you released your highly anticipated debut album, ‘Heaven Knows’. What was the writing and recording process like?

Mica: The recording process was definitely a huge learning curve for me. It’s the first time I’ve self-produced a body of work so there were a lot of challenging aspect and things to learn.

The writing process for me is really meditative – I love to write to help process my emotions. I always write alone and I like to use a lot of stream of consciousness writing.

LJ: How has your career progressed since this release, and where would you like to be in 5 years time?

Mica: This year has been really incredible for me. The response to the album has been really amazing. I’ve had a lot of support across the industry and I’ve got an amazing team working with me and my record label Golden Hour Music. Its definitely challenging releasing music on your own label but I also love this aspect of what I do so one of my main aims in the next five years is of course to continue releasing more of my own music but also to work with other artists as a producer and release their music on my label.

LJ: What is your favourite song on the album and why?

Mica: l don’t have favourites, they are all my children 😂😉

LJ: Your music focuses on themes of human nature, spirituality, love, and oppression, to name a few. How do you reflect these themes in your compositions?

Mica: I think these themes come through organically in my writing because they are part of who I am and what I think about and like to explore through other forms of art as well.

LJ: What are you most looking forward to about performing at Turner Sims Southampton?

Mica: It will be my first time performing in Southampton and the show is part of my first UK tour. The band, my sound engineer and I are fine tuning everything as we go along and I think it’s just getting better and better so with Turner Sims being one of the last shows in this run, I think we’ll all be feeling even better about where we are with the performance.

LJ: Lastly, as you’re part of our Summer Nights season, it’s only fitting that we ask what your favourite flavour of ice cream is?!

Mica: Mint chocolate chip
