Jane Austen and her contemporaries explored lands near and far through music making at home. This special event, presented and devised by Professor Jeanice Brooks and Dr Mary-Jannet Leith as part of the University of Southampton’s ‘The Global Jane Austen’ conference, features the acclaimed early music group Ensemble Hesperi. Performing on instruments including a 1796 Broadwood grand piano, the ensemble will draw inspiration from the music books owned by the writer and her family for a lively tour of Austen’s musical world. After the concert, experts on 18th-century literature and travel from the University’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities will join us for a discussion with audience participation.

Pre-concert event: From 5pm in the Turner Sims foyer, explore a range of book stalls and Austen attractions, with the opportunity for book signings and the chance to meet Austen experts.
