Award-winning innovator and multi-instrumentalist Malin Lewis brings fresh energy to Scottish West Coast traditions, performing with a self-made, custom-designed bagpipe. Joined by acclaimed musicians Sally Simpson (fiddle) and Ali Hutton (guitar), Malin’s music is a powerful blend of tradition and invention – full of emotion, movement, and meaning.
In May 2024, Malin released their debut album ‘Halocline’ on Hudson Records. A halocline is a natural boundary between salt and fresh water, home to unique life forms. For Malin, it’s a metaphor for their trans identity – living beautifully in the space between binaries. Influenced by legends like Martyn Bennett, Duncan Chisholm, and Sharon Shannon, Malin’s music is lively, sensitive and thought-provoking. They’ve toured across the UK, Canada, and Europe, and recently contributed music to ‘The Outrun’ film.
What makes Malin’s music truly unique is the instrument they play: a one-of-a-kind, two-octave Smallpipe they designed and built themselves. This deep connection to their instrument gives their music a distinctive voice that captivates audiences wherever they perform.

‘For a piper like Lewis, whose new album ‘Halocline’ is a soft, subtle revelation, the tradition remains a solid bedrock and the new sounds come from the quiet genius of how they’re interpreted.’
