Step dancing – or ‘stepping’ – was once one of Britain’s most widespread folk-dance forms. A social dance that thrived everywhere from street corners to kitchen parties, pubs, fairs and festivals, it needed nothing more than a pair of willing feet and a good tune.
Join renowned step dancer Jo Harmer and live musicians for an uplifting, accessible workshop that brings this lively tradition into the present day. You’ll learn simple steps, foot-tapping patterns and rhythmic ideas that fit naturally with the music. There are no set routines to memorise; instead, accompanied by live musicians, you’ll discover how these steps can be woven into easy social dances, inspired by material collected in Southampton and the New Forest over 120 years ago.
Energetic, welcoming and rooted in local heritage, this workshop is perfect for anyone curious to give stepping a try.
