Melody reigns throughout Schubert’s Trout Quintet, making it one of the most enduringly poplar pieces of chamber music in the repertoire. The template for Beethoven’s piano and wind Quintet in E flat major, Op 16, is often compared to Mozart’s Quintet for the same instruments. Yet while this essentially genial music owes a debt to Mozart, Beethoven’s voice and methods remain his own. Up to this point, he was most famous for his dazzling displays of improvisational skill and keyboard virtuosity. This quartet showcases the composing and performing prowess to come.
Linking the two well-known quintets is the lesser-known J.B. Cramers’ work. It is based on the same instrumentation as Schubert’s; piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass.
The mixed instrument chamber ensemble comprises some of the most experienced and respected musicians in the UK. They are hand-picked by the group’s artistic director, international double bass virtuoso Leon Bosch.
Under Bosch’s direction, I Musicanti presents distinctive programmes with a particular emphasis on music that has been lost and found or simply overlooked: great works by unknown composers and unknown works by great composers.
The double bassist performed as a member of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Philharmonia and Hallé for over 30 years, learning the repertoire and conductor’s craft from inside the orchestra. In 2015, he finally made the transition to the podium. Since then he has conducted orchestras across the UK, Europe, India, South Africa and Mozambique.
During his playing career, Leon performed concertos around the world. He served as a guest with ensembles such as the Lindsays, Brodsky Quartet and Zukerman Chamber Players.
Leon grew up in South Africa, the son of the political activist Jonas Fred Bosch, and spent time in a police cell for organising protests while at school. He left the apartheid regime behind to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
For this concert I Musicanti features renowned pianist Peter Donohoe. Born in Manchester in 1953, he studied at Chetham’s School of Music. He went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music with Derek Wyndham and then in Paris with Olivier Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod. He is renowned as one of the foremost pianists of our time for his musicianship, stylistic versatility and commanding technique.
