Matt Carmichael Quintet

Warm, lyrical jazz from some of the leading lights of the Scottish scene.

Scottish saxophonist and composer Matt Carmichael is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary jazz. He draws on both jazz and folk influences to create music of startling beauty and nuance.

He presents music from his latest album ‘Held in the Dark’, released October 2026 on Edition records. Deeply personal, it reflects the experience of supporting a loved one through ongoing health struggles. It explores the nuances of isolation, resilience and hope.

His album draws inspiration from the intimacy, warmth and guitar-led soundscapes of singer-songwriter records. It embraces a more indie-folk/rock aesthetic while remaining rooted in the improvisational freedom of jazz. Experience the moving collective chemistry that defines Carmichael’s live performances.
