Step into the world of Dickens’s only opera – a comic tale full of charm, wit, and unforgettable characters.

Before he became a famous novelist, Charles Dickens tried his hand at theatre. ’The Village Coquettes’, written in 1836, is a light-hearted operetta in two acts. It’s one of his lesser-known works, but it sparkles with the humour and sharp observation we associate with Dickens.

The idea began as a collaboration with composer John Pyke Hullah, a friend of Dickens’s sister. At first, they had different visions – Hullah imagined an Italian-style opera, while Dickens leaned towards English drama. What emerged was a delightful English comedy, set in a lively village.

Written just before ‘The Pickwick Papers’ launched Dickens’s literary career, ’The Village Coquettes’ offers a glimpse into his early creative spirit. Expect romance, mischief, and a vivid slice of village life.

Featuring orchestral accompaniment, a Come & Sing chorus, and talented young soloists, this is a rare chance to experience Dickens in a whole new light.
