David Owen Norris plays excerpts from recordings featuring Elgar himself, Barbirolli, Boult, Sir Mark Elder, Beatrice Harrison, Casals, Navarra, Isserlis, Kanneh-Mason, and (of course) Jacqueline Dupré. He will show some of Elgar’s sketches, discuss what the recordings tell us about the transmission of performing tradition, and choose the ‘best-ever’ recording – and it’s not that one!
