Our ocean is full of extraordinary stories. Come and discover what they can tell us about our changing world, and our power to shape what happens next. Journey from the frozen waters of Antarctica to the hidden depths of the ocean with two people who have spent their careers exploring places few of us will ever see.
Professor Alberto Naveira Garabato, Regius Professor of Ocean Sciences at the University of Southampton and Fellow of the Royal Society, takes us to Antarctica, where a vast wilderness of ice is being transformed by a warming ocean. Hear how scientists are using ships, autonomous robots, mathematical theories and computer simulations to uncover what is happening beneath the surface, why Antarctic ice is melting, and what these discoveries can tell us about our future.
Orla Doherty, television producer and director who made two episodes of BBC’s Blue Planet II, takes us deeper still. Drawing on more than two decades exploring coral reefs, the deep sea and frozen oceans, including 50,000 nautical miles sailed and a thousand hours spent in submersibles, Orla brings us face to face with extraordinary animals and the lessons they offer about survival, resilience and hope.
From cutting-edge ocean science to unforgettable encounters with the natural world, Voices of the Ocean is a chance to see our blue planet differently and discover why our connection with the ocean matters.
This event is organised by the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute at the University of Southampton, which brings together expertise from across disciplines to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing our oceans and the marine and maritime world.
Everyone is welcome! Whether you’re a secondary school pupil, a college or sixth form student, coming along as a family or grandparent, or simply curious about the ocean, exploration, science and discovery, this event is for you.
