Since its launch in 1999, the BBC’s renowned New Generation Artists scheme has brought to the public’s attention many young musicians at the beginning of their international careers. Tonight we welcome two current NGAs, cellist Andrei Ioniţă and pianist Mariam Batsashvili, for a programme specially curated with Turner Sims. Their programme includes Bach’s fifth solo suite alongside Ligeti’s work, of which the composer said ‘I attempted in this piece to write a beautiful melody, with a typical Hungarian profile, but not a folk song …’. The first of Schubert’s impromptus, from his set dedicated posthumously to Liszt, is complemented by music by Liszt himself, his stirring and virtuosic Dante sonata.

Presented by Turner Sims in partnership with BBC Radio 3
