Vienna Piano Trio Iii

TUESDAY 17 APRIL - 8:00 PM

David Mccarroll violin
Matthias Gredler cello
Stefan Mendl piano

Beethoven Variations in E flat, Op 44
Schumann Piano Trio No 3 in G minor, Op 110
Tchaikovsky Piano Trio in A minor, Op 50

Tchaikovsky’s sole contribution to the piano trio medium was born out of adversity. The death of the composer’s close friend and mentor Nikolai Rubinstein inspired him to produce this work with its subtitle In memory of a great artist. The work’s second movement is characterised by a set of variations, and the concert begins with Beethoven’s set, the starting point for which was a song from one of the popular operas at the time. Schumann’s third trio, a relative rarity in concert programmes compared to his first two, was described by his wife Clara as ‘…original and increasingly passionate, especially the scherzo, which carries one along with it into the wildest depths’.

Concert II: Tuesday 6 February
Concert IV: Tuesday 15 May
