Youth Voice leading the way at BSO After Dark

March 16, 2026

Turner Sims Assistant Producers are young creatives aged 18 – 25, based in Southampton. Bringing together University of Southampton students and young people across the city, Assistant Producers are part of our year-round programme to support young people into careers into the music industry and to centre Youth Voice in our programming and workforce.

For the past six months the Assistant Producers have been working closely with the teams at Turner Sims (TS) and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) to develop a very special concert.

‘BSO After Dark featuring Baby Panna’ (13 March 2026) was themed around the idea of journeys. This musical experience opened with the first half being an exploration of journeys within the self: self-discovery, aging, adventure, resilience, reflection and nostalgia. The second half explored journeys beyond our planet: a search for meaning amid the cosmos.

An immersive concert, with atmospheric lighting, allowed space for reflection and imagination. A combination of classical repertoire, film music and spoken word, this concert revisited what classical music can be, exploring how music and words, used together can create a tapestry of human experience and wonder.

Isabelle Chandler, Assistant Producer and third year music student at University of Southampton said, “We wanted to switch up the idea of a classical concert. Bringing in Portsmouth-based jazz-rap artist Baby Panna was Antonio’s idea. We were considering different ways of framing classical music and how to bring in younger people.”

“We chose a repertoire, ranging from twentieth century avant-garde with Olivier Messiaen’s ‘Quartet for the End of Time, II. Vocalise’ to piece that were more well-known and accessible like “Bundle of Joy’ from the movie ‘Inside Out’.”

“The inclusion of Baby Panna’s spoken word – performed for the first time alongside the BSO musicians – made it a universal and immersive experience. By bringing humour and referencing everyday experiences, it created a casual and more personal way to communicate with the audience.”

Carley Divish, Assistant Producer and Archaeologist reflected on the audience experience: “I want audiences to understand a new scope of music. For fans of contemporary classical to see spoken word in a new way, and for people questioning what the concert could bring, to spark a new love. I want people to see that music, no matter the genre, can spark emotion in you.”

The event attracted lots of first-time visitors to Turner Sims. One man shared with the Assistant Producers that he’d come along having seen the Daily Echo concert listing was familiar with some of the pieces in the programme.

Ralph Banks, Assistant Producer and 3rd year music student shared that, “Working with the BSO was a great way of gaining experience and improving my knowledge of event management. It’s given me opportunities to work on areas such as marketing, as well as curate a concert with my ideas and see them come to life.”

Final word to Antonio Chikhungu, Assistant Producer and Afro-British events curator to sum up the night in one sentence: “A fantastical selection of music with spoken word as a connecting thread”

‘BSO After Dark featuring Baby Panna’ was presented by Turner Sims in partnership with BSO.

BSO After Dark: not your typical concert

What happens when you mix orchestral soundtracks, spoken word poetry, atmospheric lighting, and a room full of curious people ready to feel something?

February 12, 2026

You get BSO After Dark, a one-night-only immersive concert designed to hit differently, with mixtape energy, late-night thoughts, and music that takes you somewhere else entirely.

Enjoy an evening built around the idea of journeys, not just across galaxies and imaginary worlds, but inward too. An ensemble from Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will perform music you might recognise from film and contemporary classical artists, including Hans Zimmer, Max Richter, Arvo Pärt, and ‘Bundle of Joy’ from ‘Inside Out’.

A

Joining the orchestra is Baby Panna, a Portsmouth-based spoken word artist known for blending poetic lyricism with jazz-inspired flow. This concert marks his first time performing alongside musicians from Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and it’s exactly the kind of unexpected collaboration this concert is all about. His words, layered over live ensemble sound, create something intimate and expansive at the same time.

One of the most exciting things about BSO After Dark is that it’s been shaped by the Turner Sims Assistant Producers, young creatives aged 18-25 who are helping design the future of live music.

Izzy, a University of Southampton music student and Assistant Producer, explains: “I want audiences to have a really immersive experience… time to de-stress and exist outside of daily pressures for a couple of hours. I hope it broadens their curiosity and inspires them to explore more music.”

Carley Divish, another Assistant Producer shared what drives her:

“My favourite part of producing events is hearing people say they never thought they would understand this type of music, or never would have come to something like this. I love seeing people’s world expand.”

This concert exists because young creatives believe classical music can be more open, more emotional, and more connected to how we experience the world now.

a

Before the concert, step into The Vibe Lounge in the Turner Sims foyer from 6.30pm, with a live DJ set from DJ Jack Pudding. It’s free, it’s relaxed, and it’s the perfect way to shift out of your day and into the atmosphere of the night.

So… is this concert for you?

Yes! Especially if you:

  • Love film soundtracks
  • Are into poetry, spoken word, or storytelling
  • Want to experience something immersive and different
  • Are curious about orchestral music but don’t know where to start
  • Need a break from constant notifications and noise
  • Want to feel something real, live, and shared

You don’t need to know anything about classical music. Just bring your ears, your imagination and your curiosity.

The Vibe Lounge

Turner Sims has a new series of musical events catered towards bringing a new audience into the music venue. The Vibe Lounge is a series of pre-show events that are produced by young people from around Southampton, using the foyer in an innovative way, bringing in local artists, and thinking outside of the box.

Carley Divish talks about her experience as a member of the very first Vibe Collective.

January 24, 2025

I was part of the first Vibe Collective, recruited from the student body of the University of Southampton and 18-25 year olds living in Southampton. I was working on my Master’s Degree in Maritime Archaeology at the time, new to the city and new to the country. When I saw the advertisement for the Vibe Collective, I remembered my past working as a bartender for musical events and hosting radio shows in my free time and decided to apply. The interview was group based, and we were challenged to create a marshmallow and pasta stick tower, whilst my future bosses took notes on our collaborative skills. Fortunately, I was chosen.

Our task as employees was to create our own unique event, given a budget and very few other constraints. We needed to focus on what would engage other young people in the community and on the campus. This was a crazy opportunity to innovate in a beautiful space located in the middle of the University of Southampton, but disconnected from the students walking around it every day. Thus, the Vibe Lounge came into being.

A
Carley (front row, centre, in blue) with her fellow Vibe Collective members at Turner Sims.

As a group, we debated for days on the best event, from alternative skate/rap shows to classical-inspired video games. Finally, an idea to create a jazz club with bespoke drinks was put forward. We knew that new artists would keep it engaging, and looking outside the traditional jazz scene was needed.

From the beginning, the Vibe Lounge has brought in emerging artists from Hampshire and surrounding regions. All of them have been amazing people and very easy to work with, giving us in the Vibe Collective great experience in what programming a concert is. Baby Panna, who performed for the Vibe last year at the Turner Sims Summer Festival, even brought his own audience to Turner Sims, opening up the venue to people from all around the UK who were interested in his rap-jazz mixed genre.

A
A
Baby Panna takes a selfie with the audience at The Vibe Lounge.

Each of the artists have been utterly unique, bringing talent, innovation, and amazing music to the venue. The foyer of Turner Sims fills up with students walking by, those who have heard previously about the show, and the ticket-holders for the show in the main auditorium afterward. By the end of the 30-40 minute set, the artist performing in the foyer has a crowded venue, many of whom are discovering a new genre they now love. Reviews of the show are always positive, with the audience more often than not returning for the next lounge, taking advantage of the free performance and creating a social, lively atmosphere.

As someone who has worked in the music industry for some time, my experience programming the Vibe Lounge has been so much fun and a true joy. It has relit my passion for the music industry in a way I never expected. I highly encourage everyone to get out there and see some live music, immerse yourself in art, and if the Vibe Lounge is how you choose to do that, you are more than welcome at Turner Sims.

From Hardanger to Harmonium: A Folk-Tastic Journey with FAYE

On the 28th of September, 2024, working in partnership with Turner Sims, FAYE (the FolkActive Youth Ensemble) took part in a workshop with Norwegian musicians Nils Økland and Sigbjørn Apeland. Ffion Richardson, member of the FolkActive Youth Ensemble, reflects on the inspiring experience.

January 24, 2025

The duo craft a mesmerising soundscape that beautifully marries the rich heritage of Norwegian folk music with the contemporary. Their latest album, ‘Glimmer’, showcases the beauty of the Hardanger fiddle, which Nils plays with haunting grace. The instrument’s unique resonating strings create a shimmering tapestry woven with threads of emotion. Complementing this, Sigbjørn breathes new life into the harmonium. Drawing from his classical background, he integrates innovative elements into his arrangements while honouring traditional roots. This musical style is starkly different from the traditional English folk music FAYE typically play and through the concert and workshop created new paths for them to follow on their musical journey.

Within the workshop, FAYE were taught two Norwegian folk tunes. The first was a hymn called ‘O du min Immanuel’ (‘O You My Emmanuel’) which featured gentle, flowing phrases that allowed room for interpretation. To further the youth group’s understanding of their style of playing, Nils and Sigbjørn discussed the decisions behind their arrangement of the hymn and explained their method of improvisation around the melody. The second tune they taught was a dance tune called ‘Springen’ and Nils explained the different bowing techniques he had learned from various teachers. The duo then took the stage to perform for the FAYE members, followed by a Q&A. The ensemble expressed interest in the historic instruments, the hardanger and harmonium, and were given the opportunity to play them. This inspired a few members to start a ‘Harmonium Wish List’ for Christmas – because who wouldn’t want this magical instrument to get them through the holidays?

As a fellow musician, I found their innovative approach to arrangement truly inspiring, leading me to learn my first Norwegian tunes, which has sparked a desire to explore more Scandinavian folk music. Fern, another member of FAYE, said: ‘we learnt two very new and contrasting tunes. Nils recommended, when you’re learning a new tune, to look at someone else’s bow which was really useful.’ Marnie, also from FAYE, added, ‘the tunes were very fun to learn, and I found the harmonium and hardanger very interesting’.

We would like to give a huge thank you to Kevin Appleby and Turner Sims for funding and hosting the workshop. This opportunity ignited a passion for Scandinavian folk traditions that will resonate in FAYE’s future performances, highlighting the importance of collaboration and the shared joy of music, and ensuring that the spirit of folk traditions continues to thrive in contemporary settings.

Intern Insights: Summer Family Day Recap

Our intern Megan gives us a recap of her experience during Summer Family Day 2024.

July 31, 2024

Summer Family Day 2024 was an absolute hit with both kids and parents alike! In anticipation of upcoming family events like Winter Family Day (Sunday 24 November), our Concert Promotions Intern, Megan Harrison takes a look back to July to show you what amazing family events are held here at Turner Sims…

On Sunday 30 June I got the amazing opportunity to help out on Summer Family Day and see the event first hand! Turner Sims and the nearby outside areas of Highfield campus were full of liveliness, music, and delicious food stalls. The day was filled with fun activities, music and performances that, together, created a day of musical family fun!

Throughout the day, the Turner Sims foyer was busy with face painting and crafts. Paper artist Nathan Ward ran an all-day drop-in workshop where children could create their own unique bugs. The face painting and crafts were extremely popular, and I saw lots of happy children with uniquely painted faces and others carrying around the paper bugs they had made.

A

The first event of the day was the David Gibb Big Band, which filled the morning with lots of noise in the main concert hall. I heard it was a really imaginative show! Soon after, there was a Big Bug Hunt in the gardens, where kids and families looked for all sorts of different insects on Highfield campus. The children were particularly keen on the stickers they got as a reward for finding all the bugs!

P

At the Community Stage, many local performers came to put on amazing shows. There was a great variety of people – we had a dance group and a local youth orchestra give fantastic performances. It was great to see Turner Sims and the community supporting these local artists.

Jham! was extremely popular, with the fusion of classical Indian dancing and more modern styles of music creating an exhilarating outdoor show. The audience was thrilled by the dancing and lots of people stood up and got involved in the dancing themselves!

In the afternoon, another show in the concert hall called JUMP was on. Following the creepy-crawly theme of this Family Day, JUMP, composed by Karen Wimhurst, combined field recordings of insects and amphibians with clarinet music.

The Puppetry and Conducting Workshop was held under the marquee. The workshop began with the puppet Pythagoras conducting for an accordion player, showing how his movements influenced her playing. After this, newspaper and tape were held out and the kids and grown-ups created their own puppets to conduct with! As someone who’s taken conducting classes, I think this was a really clever and engaging way of introducing conducting to children.

The final event of the day was Creative Beats Workshop, which ended summer Family Day on a high note. Led by Yetta and Emma, members of YES! Creative Beats from the Isle of Wight, kids and grownups played boom-whackers and hand percussion in time with recorded tunes. The energy from Yetta and Emma was amazing and kept everyone engaged, so much so that even the Arts at University of Southampton Student Ambassadors were joining in!

There was lovely positive audience feedback and families had an amazing time. The atmosphere the entire day was so vibrant and cheerful that I couldn’t help but enjoy myself!

Check out some of these amazing photos taken on the day by Nosa Malcolm…
