Led by Alina Ibragimova, the Chiaroscuro Quartet is revered as one of Europe’s leading period instrument ensembles today. This evening we are delighted to welcome them to begin a two year partnership as Turner Sims Associate Artists. They open the series with works by two giants of the Classical period. The six quartets of Haydn’s Op 33 set, from which we hear the first and the third, were the first the composer had written in almost a decade. Nicknamed the Russian quartets because of their dedication to the Grand Duke Paul of Russia, Haydn described them as being written ‘in a new and special way’. Beethoven’s three Rasumovky quartets were named after the Russian Ambassador to Vienna who commissioned them. Composed on a grand scale – they are twice as long as any of his previous quartets – they gave audiences of the time a rhythmic and melodic landscape unheard of before. One contemporary of the composer declared ‘they’re not music’, to which Beethoven replied: “they’re not for you, but for a later age”.
